John Whittingdale MP was very pleased to have a meeting with Chief Crown Prosecutor for East of England, Frank Ferguson, at the CPS Headquarters in Chelmsford today. John had the opportunity to discuss with Mr Ferguson the work of the CPS in Essex and the efforts to tackle delays in casework caused by the Covid pandemic.
John said:
“I know from speaking with my constituents that the delay in hearing cases can cause distress to families, particularly if the accused is remanded in custody. These delays are principally caused by insufficient capacity in the Courts and we have a shortage of both Judges and recorders across the county.
I am encouraged that the CPS is working with police and the Courts Service to reduce these delays, I also welcome the regular publication of scorecards showing performance data
