John Whittingdale and other MPs from East Anglia, met with Greg Hands MP the Minister for Energy, to raise concerns about National Grid’s East Anglia GREEN proposals.
Under this scheme, a new line of 400kV pylons will be built across Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex including through Margaretting in the Maldon constituency.
John share the concerns that this proposal will have a severely detrimental effect on the countryside and local environment affecting thousands of residents along its route. He is one of a group of MPs pressing for an alternative offshore undersea cable route – Sea Link 2 – to be considered as part of an offshore grid.
The East of England will supply a large part of our future electricity needs through offshore windfarms, a new nuclear station at Sizewell and possibly another at Bradwell.
The Government has already committed to an offshore grid and this must include the coast of East Anglia to protect the countryside. It is unacceptable that this option is excluded from the consultation and we are pressing the Minister to intervene.
