Sir John Whittingdale MP spoke at the Conference organised by the Ukrainian Embassy in London on the Legal Response to Russia’s War in Ukraine.
Speaking as the Special Rapporteur on War Crimes to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, John joined a panel with Mariia Mezentseva MP, Leader of the Ukrainian Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Myroslava Krasnoborova, Prosecutor at Eurojust, Feargal Gaynor of Doughty Street Chambers and Aarif Abraham of North Garden Chambers. Also speaking at the Conference were Victoria Prentis MP, UK Attorney General, and Iryna Mudra, Deputy Minister of Justice of Ukraine.
John said:
“Russia is responsible for appalling atrocities which amount to War Crimes, Crimes against Humanity and possibly Genocide. It is essential that those responsible are in due course brought to justice including Putin and his inner circle. I strongly welcome the efforts by the Ukrainian authorities and the International Criminal Court to collect the evidence that can be used in any future trials and the support being given to them by the British Government”.
