Sir John Whittingdale visited the Plume Academy for a meeting with Carl Wakefield, Executive Principal, prior to his leaving the post.
John and Carl discussed the plans to expand the school to accommodate the growing number of families moving to Maldon as well as the progress made under his headship.
During his visit, John also took part in the cyclathon organised by staff and pupils to raise funds for charities. Teachers Craig Farrow and Rob Howlett organised the fund raiser in memory of teachers Matt Preece, Mandy McGee and Ade Onakomaiya who all died after a battle with cancer.
A total of £1, 263.73 was raised which is being split between The David Randall Foundation for Matt, Fair Havens Hospice for Mandy and Macmillan Cancer for Ade.
John said:
“Carl Wakefield has done a fantastic job during his time at the Plume and will be greatly missed. He has not only raised standards but made the Plume Academy a central part of the local community. Typical of this was the fundraising effort in memory of three much-loved teachers and I was delighted that I was also able to support this”.
