John attended a road safety awareness day in Burnham. The event which was organised outside the Co-op in Burnham saw the Essex Police roads policing team, Burnham speed watch group and the Safer Essex Roads Partnership on hand to answer any questions.
Following a fatal crash in Southminster in April and a serious crash in Bradwell on Sea in May, the event was aimed to raise awareness about speeding issues on the Dengie. Police have also been carrying out a number of speed checks across Burnham in recent months.
John Whittingdale said: “The number of road traffic accidents in the District has long been a matter of concern, particularly as a number have resulted in serious injuries or fatalities. Overwhelmingly the causes of these have been excessive speed, alcohol or the use of mobile phones. All three are illegal and I welcome this initiative to get across the message that drivers must remain safe”.
