John Whittingdale visited Maldon Salt to see the packing and distribution operation at Wycke Hill, Maldon, and to discuss their plans to expand the business. John previously took Margaret Thatcher to visit Maldon Salt in his first election campaign in 1992.
Maldon Salt was founded in 1882 and is a family-run business. It still makes salt using the same traditional artisan methods taking water from the Blackwater Estuary. Originally, there were three salt pans at the Downs Road site but in recent years this has increased substantially. The Company now has 37 salt pans, 30 of which are at their production facility in Goldhanger. It is now intended to create another 36 pans at Goldhanger in an investment of around £4 million. Maldon Salt has been endorsed by many famous chefs and is now exported to 55 countries.
